Eyang

Eyang: I received a box of photos of my mom and dad. The box had been with my sister for some years. I spent some time looking through the photos and was very drawn to the fashion of my parents in the 60s. My mom deserves a post just about her and her immaculate dress sense. For today, I want to tell you about my dad. He had a darn gorgeous youth. Well yes, he was (still is) handsome, drove a cabriolet with the hood down, travelled quite a bit (he worked on a ship), shared friendships that were captured on film that made me jealous. His style - dashing.
I saw a couple photos of dad in this one batik shirt. I think it might just have been his favourite. There were a few photos of him donning it. By pure happenstance, I realised I had just commissioned my Batik makers in Solo to make ten pieces of the Sidomulyo motif. This is the very motif on dad’s batik shirt. Serendipity. So I decided to design some men’s shirts (yes my first ever batik tulis ready-to-wear for men!) and dedicate it to my now 84 year old father - Effendi Kadir.
I have called this collection “Eyang” - an affectionate term for ‘grandparent’. My mother tells me it’s Javanese. I like the word because “yang” resonates with “sayang” which means love. My dad is very much loved by his two children, and especially his seven grandchildren. With mom, he built this family to show love they way we do. There will be nine pieces available for purchase. One piece is Dad’s. ❤️ Salam sayang, O
